On Friday, July 12 2013, during the KTVU Channel 2 Noon newscast, the newsreader read out a series of names for the four pilots involved in the Asiana Airlines crash. Unfortunately, the station had been conned by a summer intern at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The station called the NTSB and were somehow connected to the intern, who then made up names for the pilots – amazingly quick thinking by the intern.
KTVU apologised shortly before 6pm on Friday. The original mistake and apology in the video below:
