Here’s an old British Pathé newsreel featuring the modern wonder of London Heathrow Airport – which “at peak times can cope with 50 movements an hour”.

If this was 50 an hour for all day – say from 8am to 10pm (14 hours), capacity was around 700.

I checked the London Heathrow site for statistics and found that: Daily average air transport movements in 2012: 1,288.

Heathrow is running at full capacity every day now. So capacity hasn’t even doubled in almost 60 years of operations.
