This restaurant was formerly called Locanda Marino – which had previously good reviews. The head chef is Davide Suleymano and we remembered him from a great dinner we had in Il Melograno (now closed).

Location is central Prague, between the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.

We visited on a Saturday night on a pre-paid, five-course tasting menu. The restaurant was quite busy with an eclectic mix of diners and a large group of older Swedish tourists. We sat in the smoking section as the Swedish group were due to arrive in the non-smoking and we were worried they might be a bit raucous – sometimes the low price of alcohol in Prague compared to Nordic countries results in over-imbibing. we needn’t of worried as they were perfectly behaved. Despite there being some smokers on nearby tables, we weren’t bothered by smoke, the high ceilings and good ventilation system seemed to prevent smoke drifting. The whole place, although large, had a cosy warm atmosphere.

Our waiter was friendly, helpful and appeared to speak fluent English, Czech and Italian. He wasn’t fazed by our request for a half-litre carafe of Italian Merlot house red (200Kc) – we’d checked the wine list online and bottles were quite expensive. We ended up having two half-litre carafes of what was a good quality house wine. We also had two large bottles of San Pellegrino (100Kc).

Davide came to our table and asked what our preferences were for antipasto and pasta. We said we’d have anything he thought was good, but liked fresh fish. Several plates arrived with king prawns, Carpaccio, salmon steaks – all delicious. Then came a fresh linguine with mussels and another king prawn. We could have finished there and been happy, but we knew another course was coming.

Davide returned to discuss our main course options. We would have loved to try the Irish Angus Steak, but were too full to attempt that – so we went for more fish. The fish arrived perfectly filleted, together with grilled vegetables and spinach.

Our waiter convinced us that we should have tiramisu and panacotta for pudding. The tiramisu was especially good.

During the course of our meal, I checked out the toilets. These are actually part of the main theatre building and accessed via a side door that leads from the restaurant to that building. The toilets have a security keylock and so you’ll need to ask the waiter for the code. The toilets were well maintained, although the gents soap dispenser had run out of soap. This was made more apparent as we were missing a finger bowl during our antipasti and I’d been peeling prawns. But the waiter did bring a finger bowl for a seconde.

There is free Wi-Fi available – you need to ask for the password. I think it would be a good idea to have a small card on each table that provided both Wi-Fi and toilet passwords.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who found themselves in the centre of Prague and was looking for good Italian food.
