U Tučňáků is on a quiet street about a 10 minute walk from Andel Metro station. The nearest tram stop is Zborovská. It seems to be part of a group of three pub restaurants, all located around the Praha 5 – Smíchov area.

The entire place is non-smoking which is a brave move for a bar restaurant in the Czech Republic.

Access is via a steep set of stairs that lead down into a modern cozy cellar pub/restaurant that has obviously had investment in the décor and furnishings. There are two seating areas; the first with high tables and chairs, the second with low tables and chairs. We sat in the high-table area.

It was a Saturday evening when we visited and the place was almost empty. We ordered 0,5l Staropramen Nefiltrovaný (non-filtered) 11° 38Kc, which is slightly high for this location, but only by a few crowns. We did ask for 0,4l Granát @32Kc (being a better beer), but they didn’t have any.

A 200g Steak was a good price of 189Kc – add a Pepper sauce for 25Kc and potato wedges for 29Kc and that’s still good. The steaks arrived medium rare as requested, were nicely presented and delicious.

There was free wi-fi without a password.

The toilets were modern and clean. I would have preferred a real Dyson Airblade hand dryer rather than the imitation that didn’t work as well as a Dyson.

During my walk to (and while in) the toilets, I had to negotiate several low rounded ceiling beams. It would be easy to smash your head into one of these, especially after a few drinks. I’d recommend that the restaurant added softened bumpers to all of these.

I’d recommend this place to anyone who wants decent pub food at a good price in a non-smoking environment – just bring protective headgear if you’re planning on having more than a few beers!

Opening times:
Monday – Thursday 11:00 – 23:00
