BA started charging for seat selection back in 2009. The minimum charge is £10 per seat for short haul economy and goes up for longer flights and certain premium seats like the exit row. Bronze, silver and gold members of BAs Executive Club could choose seats for free.

BA introduced Hand Baggage Only (HBO) fares on 26 February 2013. These fares are typically £10 less than a fare that allows bags to be checked in.

BA then announced that from March 25th 2015, bronze, silver and gold members would need to pay for seat selection on HBO fares.

Now BA have reinstated free seat selection for bronze, silver and gold executive members on HBO fares from 14th June 2017. This also applies to equivalent One World partner members; Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby.

BA also write that if you have paid for your seat selection already, they’ll refund the payment.

Some good news for elite One World members. Now all we want is free drinks and food instead of buy-on-board.
