The Hilton Embassy Suites, Monterey, is a stopover option when driving on the scenic Highway 1 between SF and LA.

We checked out of the Hilton San Francisco Financial District and the journey, including plenty of stops for views and photos, took maybe four hours.

There was plenty of parking – we later found out that $14 was added to our bill for this. Check in was friendly and fast and we took the elevator to the top floor of the hotel atrium.

We booked a two bedroom, two bathroom suite. There was a shared lounge area, with outdoor terrace and a small kitchen. Total cost, including the cheeky $14 for parking, was $492.82 – still less than booking two rooms.

I’d say the price is high for the standard of hotel, but this is all about location. I also needed to stay at a Hilton to keep my HHonors Diamond status for another year.

All Embassy Suites have a nightly reception, with snacks and free domestic beer/wine. It’s like inviting the entire hotel to the executive lounge. We had to stand in line for drinks, but the wait wasn’t long. The snacks were pretty basic. Still at least it was free!

Breakfast was a shambles – not enough staff, not enough seats.

If you’re looking for a place to stopover in Monterey, I wouldn’t recommend the Embassy Suites unless you find a special offer or are a Hilton HHonors member looking to top up their nights.
