The Hampton Inn, Arroyo Grande, is a stopover option when driving on the scenic Highway 1 between SF and LA.

We checked out of the Embassy Suites Monterey and the journey, including plenty of stops for views and photos, plus a tour of Hearst Castle took several hours – Highway 1 isn’t about making the journey faster.

Having started our West Coast tour at the Waldorf Astoria in Las Vegas, then Hilton San Francisco, then Embassy Suites, the Hampton Inn was always going to struggle to compete – but I needed one more night to retain my Hilton Diamond.

Parking was free. Check in was friendly. Rooms ($167 per night) were clean and comfortable.

There wasn’t a safe in the room, but I knew that would be the case.

Breakfast was the usual Hampton Inn plastic knives, forks and plates, make your own waffles, cheap buffet.

The price was high for the standard of hotel, but it’s all about location. If you’re looking for a place to stopover in Arroyo Grande, I’d look elsewhere unless you find a special offer or are a Hilton HHonors member looking to top up their nights.
