The Como – Brunate funicular railway departs from Piazza Alcide de Gasperi 4 in Como and ascends 716 meters to Brunate. The line has operated since 1894.

During Summer, the funicular runs from 8am until midnight. During late March 2022 it was closed during the day for maintenance and only open from 5.30pm. Check the website https://www.funicolarecomo.it/ before your visit.

We arrived at 5.25pm – the ticket office is just inside the door. Adult ticket was € 5,70 return.

The 5.30pm train departed full and there was a large queue waiting for the 5.45pm.

Locals with a season ticket were able to bypass the queue via a special ticket barrier.

We managed to board the 6pm train, although it was still quite full (capacity 81 passengers). The return was almost empty and there wasn’t a queue to ascend.  This video shows the funicular descending.

We wandered around at the top and took in the views. Apparently, there are some interesting walking trails, but we had dinner reservations for 7.30pm.

We headed back down.

I’d recommend a ride on the Como – Brunate Funicular Railway, but only if the wait in line is less than 30 minutes – any longer and it’s probably not worth the wait.
