Apelace is Czech for appellation, the term mostly used for wine origin. However, Apelace21 isn’t a wine bar with food, this is a fine-dining restaurant with wine.

In the Vinohrady area of Prague, Apelace21 opened in November 2022, following the complete refurbishment of a former Vietnamese restaurant.

It was quiet when we arrived at 7pm on a Thursday, although more diners appeared later.

A 0.15l glass of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2018, Poderi Marchesi Migliorati, Abruzzo was 120 Kč. A large carafe of tap water was charged at 20 Kč per person.

Bread was delivered with both butter and what the British would call lard – although the Czech version is much more than that.

We also received a delicious amuse-bouche, which was based on the main course dish ‘Sous-vide wild boar loin, roasted vegetable and cream sauce, cranberry dumplings‘. What a great way to promote this dish.

We both chose ‘grilled duck breast, Jerusalem artichoke, Jerusalem artichoke puree, plums, gingerbread sauce’ 380 Kč. An excellent dish, perfectly presented and with extra sauce to pour over – which I did after this picture.

I visited the bathrooms – immaculate with individual towelling hand towels.

There are more tables at the rear of the restaurant, although I’d stick with the main dining room on our next visit.

I realise that we only had a main course, but we were surprisingly full from that.
