The Wieliczka Salt Mine is just a 40-minute train ride from Kraków’s main station. Tours last 2 – 3 hours. You will walk 3.5 km underground and climb down, but not up, 800 steps. The mine is amazing and well worth a visit.

You need to book a tour in advance with the mine https://www.wieliczka-saltmine.com/. If you want to pay extra for a tour that picks up from your hotel, the mine can arrange that https://www.wieliczka-saltmine.com/salt-mine-ticket-transfer#code.

The ‘Tourist Route’ is the most purchased ticket. There is a longer ‘Miner’s Route’ tour which we didn’t try.

It’s short walk from the station to the mine entrance – visitors queue in language-specific lines, but everything moves quickly.

We normally hate any type of guided tour, but our guide was friendly and interesting. The hardest climb is just after you arrive – down 380 steps to level one.

After that, you barely notice the remaining 420 steps as they’re spread over the tour. Don’t worry, there’s an elevator to take you back to the surface.

You’ll see large salt caves, sculptures and chandeliers made entirely from salt, a large chapel and even an underground restaurant.

Halfway through the tour, there is break and you can purchase drinks, snacks and visit the bathroom. At the end of the tour, you can visit the restaurant and then walk with another guide about 800m to the elevator.

What is amazing is that the tour only covers 3% of the mine. We really enjoyed our visit and would recommend the Wieliczka Salt Mine to anyone visiting Kraków.
